If you read my previous article, then you already know that the best time to apply for scholarships is during the academic year, preferably in the fall.
Why?
This is because many scholarship programs receive their funding at the beginning of the academic year.
Scholarships also tend to be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis so funds will likely run out around the end of the school year (May-June).
This means it is to your benefit to apply as early as possible to maximize the number of scholarships you can win in a given year.
However, any time is actually a great time to apply for scholarships because they are offered year-round so if you missed a scholarship opportunity there will always be another one.
Don’t worry if you aren’t applying during optimal periods since free money is still free money. If you’re ready to apply for scholarships then start making preparations now.
Here is a checklist you can use to cover your bases (you can also find it in our Facebook group).
Keep in mind that if you plan on being considered for institutional scholarships, as part of your financial aid package, you must submit your FAFSA by the school, state, AND federal deadlines.
Okay, so you know the best times to apply but when should you start applying for scholarships in the first place?
According to experts, you should start applying for scholarships during the summer of your junior year of high school.
This will give you enough time to win some scholarships before you receive your first financial aid offer from the colleges you applied to.
Of course, you can start applying as early as your freshman year of high school or as late as graduate study.
